Christmas in Copenhagen

If you are lucky enough to be planning a Copenhagen Christmas this year you are in for a real treat.  Christmas is a great time to visit Copenhagen and a truly magical experience.  All the buildings, both old and new, put on a special effort to look good, with Christmas displays and twinkling lights.  There are plenty of Copenhagen Christmas markets to visit, plus an endless list of Christmas treats to sample. So wrap up warm, stop off for plenty of refreshment and enjoy the cold crisp weather.  You might even be lucky enough to have snow!

Take in the Nyhavn

A simple stroll along the Nyhavn will definitely get you into the festive mood at Christmas.  The whole harbour transforms into the Nyhavn Christmas Market, where you can browse for gifts and enjoy tasty Danish treats, and boozy brews.  Christmas lights reflect on the waterfront adding to the magical feel!  It really is one of the must see Copenhagen Christmas markets!

See the Copenhagen Christmas lights!

- Kronprinsensgade

During your Copenhagen Christmas visit, make sure at some point you visit Kronprinsensgade, a fashionable retail street in the centre of the city.  It is has the prettiest lights, with a blanket of white fairy lights all the way down the street.

- Hotel D’Angleterre

The Christmas lights on the façade of the Hotel D’Angleterre are an annual treat for everyone in Copenhagen.  They really are quite lovely.

- City Hall Square – Christmas Tree

Visit City Hall Square is home to the official city Christmas tree.  Visit on the first Sunday of December for the lighting ceremony, which officially marks the start of the festive season in Copenhagen.

Go ice skating at Frederiksberg Runddel

Christmas sees the free outdoor ice rink in the entrance to Frederiksberg Garden which is popular with locals and visitors alike.  If you don’t have your own skates you can hire some there.

Visit the Carlsberg Brewery

As well as the normal tours, the Carlsberg Brewery put on an excellent Christmas Market in their rustic courtyard which is the perfect backdrop to the quaint stalls.  The market focus is on quality rather than quantity so it is a great place to find those special gifts as well as indulge in lots of sweet and savoury snacks washed down with Jacobsen speciality beers of course.

Visit the Royal Copenhagen to see their Christmas Tables exhibition and buy a Christmas Plate

Royal Copenhagen has been making Danish porcelain since 1775, and is the supplier to Danish royalty.  Every Christmas their flagship store on Strøget has a wonderful display of six Christmas Tables, each with a different theme.  Pop along for some inspiration for your own table decorations, and if you are looking for a special gift for someone, they also sell their extremely famous Christmas Plates.  Every year for the past hundred years they have created a unique Christmas plate design which is never repeated and have become very collectable!

Visit the Tivoli Gardens and the Tivoli Christmas Market

Christmas at the Tivoli Gardens is the perfect place to visit with a family and complete your Copenhagen Christmas.  Visit Santa Claus in his grotto, try the rides and browse the Tivoli Christmas market whilst surrounded by thousands of Christmas lights which really come into their own as darkness falls!

Fireworks

The regulation of fireworks in Denmark is quite strict, which so they go that extra mile to make their organised displays even more spectacular!  One place you can be sure of a fantastic display is the Tivoli Gardens, which holds an annual Fireworks Festival on the 25th, 26th, 30th and 31st of December.  Each year has a different theme and promises to be bigger and better than the last year!

Celebrate Christmas traditions such as Julemanden and the Nisse

Julemanden translates to the ‘Christmas Man’, and is of course Father Christmas and is an important part of modern Danish culture.  As are the Nisse, who are elf like characters, which date back much further in Danish folklore.  There are always plenty of stories surrounding these popular children’s characters, along with books and toys which make perfect gifts and will keep little ones entertained.  If you want to write a letter to Julemanden, please address it to:

What to do on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in Copenhagen

The Danes celebrate Christmas Eve as much as Christmas Day.  Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are a time for spending time with family and friends with gifts and good Christmas food.  Much of Copenhagen closes down from 24th to 26th December and then again on 1st January so if you are planning to eat out, then it is best to do your homework and book in advance.  If you are on your own or visiting relatives and want somewhere to stay with a decent living space and a kitchen why not book a Living Suites serviced apartment

Here at Living Suites, we offer spacious serviced apartments that offer all the comforts of home. Choose from studio apartments to 2 bedroom and extra-large apartments. We even have connecting apartments for larger groups if you need them.

They are the perfect alternative to a hotel room as you can celebrate in your own space!  You can rustle up Christmas treats in the well equipped kitchen, while the children sit at the table and write a letter to Julemanden.
